Sierra Club Virginia Chapter Endorses Jay Fisette for
Arlington County Board
Arlington, VA, July 24, 2013 – The Sierra Club is endorsing Jay Fisette running for re-election on the Arlington County Board.
Jay Fisette, who is running for reelection to the Arlington County Board, has received the Club’s endorsement in past elections and continues to demonstrate an unmatched commitment to environmental issues in Arlington. When he was the chair of the County Board three years ago, Fisette began the process of developing a Community Energy Plan. That plan, which involved all segments of the community – including property owners and developers – has now been completed and incorporated as part of Arlington’s Comprehensive Plan. It calls for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions attributable to activities within Arlington over the next 40 years. This will be achieved through increased building energy efficiency, potential district energy or combined-heat-and-power systems that are much more efficient than relying on distant power plants, an increased reliance on alternatives to single-person automobile use for transportation, and the development of significant photovoltaic capacity on large, flat roofs in the county.
This year, Fisette has spearheaded a new initiative called “Tap In Arlington” that encourages residents to pledge not to use single-use plastic water bottles. The initiative has been going well, with over 700 residents already signing the pledge and attending community events discussing the safety of tap water and the pollution caused by plastic water bottles.
Since the first votes in 2006, Fisette has been a consistent supporter of a new streetcar for the Columbia Pike corridor in Arlington and Fairfax, despite recent opposition from some who claim that buses would be more cost effective. Fisette is a consistent leader on environmental policy in Arlington, which serves as a model for other communities in Northern Virginia. The Sierra Club is very pleased to announce our endorsement of his re-election this Fall.
