Jay Wins Support From The Sierra Club and Arlington Education Association
Tuesday, October 16, 2001
Arlington, VA (October 16, 2001) - Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette,
and Democratic candidate for re-election this year to the Arlington County Board,
today earned strong backing from two community leadership groups: The Sierra Club
and the Arlington Education Association.
"I'm sincerely honored to have the outstanding support from my fellow environmentalists
and from our public school educators and employees," said Jay Fisette. "The Sierra
Club and the AEA understand as much as I do that a healthy community is one in
balance. Their vote of confidence is also for Arlington's future, through preserving
our natural resources and sustaining the quality of our children's schools. I
thank them warmly for their trust and for their help year in and year out."
The Sierra Club endorsement was delivered by Bruce Parker, Chair of the Mount
Vernon Group and also by Chair of the Chapter's political committee, George Lamb,
not only on behalf of Arlington's 4,000 Sierra Club members - but also from the
entire membership of the nation's oldest, grassroots environmental organization.
The Arlington Education Association recommendation was made on behalf of the 1,500
Arlington County's public school employees, and delivered by Kathryn Scruggs,
President of the AEA as well as Jim Schroeder, who chairs the AEA's Political
Action Committee.
Both groups gave their support in 1997 to Jay Fisette during his original successful
County Board race, and have renewed it this year. Election day for the Arlington
County Board race and other Virginia races will be held on Tuesday, November 6,
2001.
The two endorsements were revealed on Tuesday evening, October 16 at a candidate
forum held at Arlington Central Public Library.
