I have decided to withdraw my name as a Democratic candidate for Virginia’s 8th District, and to forego launching a campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.
I have determined that now is not the time for me to pursue the candidacy. It became increasingly clear that this year’s intra-party campaign will serve primarily as a referendum on the incumbent, and that running my kind of positive campaign was going to be very difficult. Despite our differences, I have no personal animus toward the incumbent. Upon reflection, I have chosen to maintain my quality of life and the balance that is so important to me.
I feel just as passionately as ever about the issues that confront Arlington and Northern Virginia – growth and transportation challenges, the quality of our environment, housing, and human rights and civil liberties. I am deeply rewarded through my public service to Arlington County, the region, and Virginia. There is plenty yet to do, and I am prepared to do my part.
Since I made my initial decision to run, I was overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response. In less than two weeks, over 250 individuals came to me personally and online to volunteer, donate generously or make personal commitments of support. I am deeply thankful for the encouragement and help offered by each and every one. Naturally, all campaign contributions will be returned as soon as possible.
At this time, I plan to make no endorsements.
All my best,
Jay Fisette
